As summer begins to wind down, athletes across Midland are putting in the work to prepare for the upcoming fall sports season. Weight rooms are filling up, conditioning workouts are becoming more intense, and practices are just around the corner.
Most athletes spend the summer training their bodies—but what about their minds?
The difference between a good athlete and a great one often isn’t physical ability alone. It’s the ability to stay confident after making a mistake, remain calm during a pressure-filled game, recover from setbacks, and trust your preparation when it matters most.
Just like strength, speed, and endurance, these mental skills can be developed. That’s where Mental Performance Coaching comes in.

Why Mental Training Is Just as Important as Physical Training
Every athlete has experienced moments where their mindset affected their performance.
Maybe you’ve:
- Felt nervous before tryouts.
- Lost confidence after one bad play.
- Struggled to stay focused during competition.
- Been afraid of making another mistake.
- Felt pressure from coaches, teammates, parents, or even yourself.
- Returned from an injury but didn’t fully trust your body.
These experiences are incredibly common—and they don’t mean you’re not mentally tough. They simply mean you haven’t been taught the tools to manage them.
Mental Performance Coaching gives athletes practical strategies they can use before, during, and after competition to stay composed and perform with confidence. Rather than relying on motivation alone, athletes learn skills they can consistently apply in practices, games, and everyday life.
Why Summer Is the Best Time to Start
Once the season begins, schedules quickly become packed with practices, games, schoolwork, and other commitments. Summer provides the perfect opportunity to build a strong mental foundation before the pressure of competition begins.
Working on your mindset now allows you to:
- Enter tryouts with greater confidence.
- Develop routines that improve focus.
- Learn how to manage game-day nerves.
- Build resilience before facing adversity.
- Improve communication and leadership.
- Start the season mentally prepared—not just physically prepared.
Think of it this way: you wouldn’t wait until the first game to start lifting weights. Your mental game deserves the same attention.
What Is Mental Performance Coaching?
At Midland Sports Rehab, The Mental Ascend program is designed to help athletes strengthen the mental side of performance through individualized coaching and team workshops. Rather than offering generic motivational advice, the program teaches practical, evidence-based strategies that athletes can immediately apply to competition.
Sessions focus on three core pillars:
Confidence
Confidence isn’t something you’re born with—it’s something you build. Athletes learn how to trust their preparation, make decisions with conviction, and move forward after mistakes instead of dwelling on them.
Resilience
Every athlete experiences setbacks. Whether it’s a tough loss, reduced playing time, an injury, or a disappointing performance, resilience is what allows athletes to respond positively and continue growing.
Emotional Control
Competition brings excitement, pressure, frustration, and high emotions. Learning how to stay calm, focused, and intentional during those moments often separates successful athletes from the rest.
More Than Sports Performance
The skills developed through Mental Performance Coaching don’t stay on the field or court.
Athletes frequently find that improved confidence, emotional regulation, goal-setting, and resilience also help them in the classroom, relationships, leadership roles, and everyday life. Learning how to navigate adversity and maintain focus are lifelong skills that extend far beyond athletics.
Meet Coach Kelsey
Mental Performance Coaching at Midland Sports Rehab is led by Coach Kelsey Gustafson, a former collegiate athlete with a Master’s degree in Sport & Human Performance.
Coach Kelsey understands firsthand the challenges athletes face because she’s experienced them herself. Through her Mental Ascend program, she helps athletes build confidence, strengthen emotional control, and develop the resilience needed to perform consistently under pressure. Her coaching philosophy centers on the belief that true growth happens by embracing challenges—not avoiding them.
